Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the Largest Black Rhino Sanctuary in East Africa. The Ol Pejeta conservancy is home to 83 black rhinos (Diceros bicornis michaeli). In Kenya the numbers of black rhino dropped from an estimated 20,000 in the 1970s to less than 300 animals in the 1980s.
Through various conservation initiatives, the remaining black rhino population has been protected from intense poaching and the current population in Kenya is estimated at 539. By 2010 Kenya will aim to increase its black rhino numbers to 650.
DETAILED ITINERARY
DAY 1: NAIROBI-ABERDARES
Activities:
Game drive – lookout for elephant’s buffalo, giant forest hog, duiker, bushbuck, black rhino, leopard, serval cat, among others.
Spectacular waterfalls including Chania, Karuru etc
Visit the Queen’s cave (Gura waterfalls)
Birdwatching.
Learn about endemic plant species.
Pick up from your Nairobi hotel or Airport in the morning and drive to Aberdare’s which is a 4 hours’ drive. After lunch Afternoon you will be transfer to The Ark lodge, The Ark has four viewing decks with balconies and lounges to provide superb game viewing from the comfort of the lodge. The animals come to you.
Dinner and overnight at hotel of your choice.
DAY 2 ABERDARES NATIONAL PARK
Spend the entire day in the wild isolated volcanic range that forms the eastern wall of the rift valley, running about 100 Km north south between Nairobi and Thompsons Falls. This beautifully scenic region is much cooler than the savannahs and offers a completely different perspective on the country. The national park lies mainly above the tree line. The scenery is spectacular with its mountainous terrain covered in thick tropical forests swathed in mist.
DAY 3: OL PEJETA GAME SANCTUARY
Embark on a relaxed drive from the Aberdare’s to Ol pejeta Conservancy where you will get to learn about conservation of rare species, see the Chimpanzees and the last WORLD’s remaining 4 Northern White Rhinos. The presence of big 5, an amazing Chimpanzee Sanctuary and world class bush lodges.

DAY 4: EXPLORE SWEETWATERS/ OL PEJETA SANCTUARY GAME SANCTUARY
Today we explore exotic Sweetwater’s Sanctuary on two extensive game runs. Our camp also overlooks one of the busiest waterhole’s in the area and offers elephant, giraffe and myriad plains game.
This is Africa as Teddy Roosevelt saw it years ago when he led one of the first safaris to tour Africa in comfort and splendour. Our tents at Sweetwater’s will remind us of this bygone era.

DAY 5: SWEETWATERS/ OL PEJETA – DRIVE TO NAIROBI
An early morning game drive in Ol Pejeta Sweetwater’s Conservancy. The Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals including all the “Big Five” (the endangered black rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo and lion).
The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains of Ol Pejeta guarantees an unforgettable safari experience. After breakfast depart by road to Nairobi.
